Elect David B. Pleat

July 21, 2010

Yesterday, the House of Representatives’ Republican leadership and our local Republican elected officials continued their pact with Big Oil and refused to take a vote to allow a constitutional amendment to be placed on the ballot banning oil drilling in State waters.  The Republican leadership refused to let the citizens of this State vote to protect their own waters and beaches.

District 7 Representative, Marti Coley, did nothing to champion the cause of the constitutional ban being placed on the ballot and was conspicuously silent in the process and went along with Republican leadership.  She failed to let the voters of our District have a chance to vote on oil drilling, denying all of us an opportunity to engage in the democratic process. We do not need a Representative who continues to defy the very citizens she represents and continues her alignment with Big Oil and the Big Oil agenda.  We need a Representative who will fight to protect our environment and our economy from the scourges of oil and gas exploration in our State waters.

I will be that Representative.  Those who would put the interests of Texas oil above their own towns and communities they represent need not be in office.

Elect David Pleat 2010

***Note: This was submitted to the local papers and media before Tuesday's session

July 19, 2010

I read the guest column by Florida Representative Matt Gaetz in the Daily News, Sunday Edition, July 18, 2010.  Within the column, Representative Gaetz calls into question Governor Crist’s special session which begins tomorrow, Tuesday, July 20, 2010.  The Governor has called the special session in large part to take a vote on adding a proposed constitutional amendment to the November, 2010 ballot which will forever ban oil drilling within the State waters of Florida (from the beach to the 10 mile mark also known as “near shore waters”). Read more>>

Five Months to Final Victory

We are now in crunch time as we enter the last five months of the campaign leading to the general election on November 2, 2010 and the primary on Tuesday, August 24, 2010.  I have tried not to pepper you with constant requests for contributions to the campaign, but we are now heading into a critical time period and I need your help to ensure success come November.

The most important thing for the next five months will be having the ability to get the message out to the nine counties within this District.  This includes absentee mailings, television time and direct mailings to the voters within the District, along with maintaining the campaign website.  Your past support and contributions have enabled me to make tremendous strides in this race.  I have spent hundreds of hours over the last nine months campaigning and put over 10,000 miles on my 4-Runner traveling all over the District meeting many voters and I believe our efforts with the campaign are having great results.  I want to finish strong and become your next Representative.

So, I am making a direct plea to you and anyone you may know for a contribution to the campaign to help me to victory.  While the maximum amount is Five Hundred Dollars ($500.00) that can be contributed to a campaign by any individual or corporation, any amount that you can dedicate to the campaign is immensely appreciated.

Reach out to anybody that you know that cares about this District and the future leadership of this District and urge them to contribute what they can.  I am overwhelmed and humbled no matter what amount I receive from contributors.  Sometimes it is a $20.00 check, other times it is the maximum of $500.00.  I need your help.

Please make any campaign checks payable to “David Pleat Campaign” and mail them to my Campaign Treasurer at:

Kellyanne Bartleson, Campaign Treasurer

You can also go on our website and contribute online through PayPal.  I appreciate your support and well wishes.  I am convinced that we can win this campaign and that now, more than ever, we need a bold, strong and independent Representative to ensure that our District has strong representation in Tallahassee.  As a State we need to establish a bold and comprehensive new energy policy, protect our environment, support our educators and create new jobs and opportunities for District 7 and its workers.  I will be that Representative.

The new House Oil and Gas Drilling Bill has been filed.  The Bill will forever change our near shore waters in the State of Florida and threatens our economy, military and environment.

The important points of this bill are:

1. Allows drilling operations from the wet sand to three mile mark once approved by local governments (i.e., county commissioners).

2. Allows drilling operations from three mile mark to ten mile mark from shore.

3. Above ground platforms allowed from six months to a year from three mile mark to six mile mark from shore. Read more>>

Pending Legislation will reduce benefits/salary of State workers

House Bill 1319 will require Florida's public employees, who have not had a pay raise in the last three years, to contribute a percentage of their salaries to their retirement benefits. This will have the net effect of a pay cut. Senate Bill 1902 and Senate Bill 1542 attempt to reduce or affect the existing retirement benefits for retired State workers who gave a lifetime of service to the State of Florida.

"Florida's public employees are the backbone of our District's communities. I believe it is unfair to take away retirement benefits that public employees have worked for years to earn. Having our firefighters, teachers and public servants take a pay cut is not the right thing to do." David Pleat, candidate for District 7 House of Representatives.

Today, the Florida Senate passed Senate Bill 6 that contains sweeping changes on:

  • how public school teachers are compensated
  • how school districts are funded
  • requires annual contract reviews for individual teachers
  • provides for withholding of school budget funds for failure to comply with new law
  • requires district tax increases for those found to violate the new law.

"This bill will undermine the spirit of individual teachers, schools and districts.  It will pit teacher vs. teacher, school vs. school, Districts vs. State and degrade our public school system while breaking the collective bargaining rights of unionized teachers.

The bill takes away individual district control and sends it to Tallahassee.  Along with Senate Bill 4 which will require a whole new wave of student testing each year, the Senate is sending our education system backwards instead of building the best school system in the Nation." ~ David Pleat, District 7 House of Representatives candidate
